Introduction

Many students have had a negative experience with Maths and this results in them disliking and failing maths. Unfortunately, without a good level of maths, students limit their career choices and degree options at university. This program is an innervation program designed to change their mindset and provide the students with the tools required to improve their performance in maths in the long-run.

What Concepts are taught?

1. Knocking down the myths about Math: Perhaps the most well known myth is that only some people are good at math. Myths like these give students reasons to give up, de-motivate them, develop a negative relationship with math and prevent them from learning math. Knocking down these myths helps students develop a growth mindset.

2. Number sense: A strong sense of numbers is the key to being able to do mathematics. Math is a language of symbols (symbolic language) and if you don’t understand the language it makes math difficult. By treating mathematics as a language you can “translate” many complicated mathematical concepts into simpler but equivalent mathematical concepts that are easy to understand and hard to forget. Learning math as a language helps you learn math based on reasoning rather than memorizing

3. How to learn from a math textbook: In most cases teachers rush through the material to finish the syllabus on time. Because people are different, some students are bound to be left behind. This leaves the students with the responsibility to learn the material on their own. Most students don’t know how to study/learn from a math textbook. Our experience tutoring and research has found that the deference between high achieving students and low achieving students is that the low achieving students do not know what is important and what they should be paying attention to. In this session we therefore teach students how to approach a chapter, break it down into manageable smaller concepts (identify the concepts) , and to determine what information they should pay attention to.
